This growing digital footprint has given rise to vehicle forensics, a discipline devoted to uncovering evidence stored within cars and using it to detect crime or reconstruct accidents.
Data sharing
There are also commercial benefits from this automated intelligence-gathering. A car manufacturer may share information with a responsible data collection company, which in turn may sell it to insurance companies, city planners, advertisers, fleet managers, or other manufacturers. Any data collection company involved in this chain is, of course, legally required to adhere to the UK’s strict data protection laws.
Data-gathering devices
Much of the data originates from internal systems. Insurance-linked black boxes track mileage and driving behaviour, while infotainment screens log GPS positions, call lists, and even browsing history whenever a phone is connected. Dozens of electronic control units act as miniature computers, controlling functions from fuel injection to seatbelt sensors and recording it all.
Emergency eCall units transmit crash details, including vehicle identification numbers and seatbelt status, to emergency services. Even the key fob retains timestamps showing when a car was locked or unlocked, and dashboard cameras continuously document journeys and surroundings.
Together, these tools form a network of digital witnesses. The convenience they offer comes with a hidden cost: your car may know more about your life than you think.
