Several factors contribute. This sort of caregiving is not possible for everyone and often takes exorbitant emotional labour, time, and patience which most people can’t afford to sustain forever. Common myths about fostering put off people willing to care for children: including a belief that only ‘the rich or super-educated’ can foster.
The Real Impact
The ones who have to face the brunt of this lack of placements are, you guessed it — children. Placement breakdowns can result in multiple-moves trauma that haunts vulnerable young people during development, diminishing their potential futures. Too many people want to foster, but social workers are over-stretched and existing carers need help.
What’s Needed
We need foster parents of all types —individuals, employed working people and families from varied backgrounds. We need improved awareness of support available and a clear line on the fostering opportunities that exist. Just acknowledge that foster carers are rockstars!
