Technology

A power cut can be caused for a number of reasons – from bad weather to construction work. When we have a power cut it can be annoying and not knowing when power will come back is extremely frustrating.

Here are a few tips on what you should do during a power cut…

Check your trip switches first to make sure that it is not an issue with something in your home rather than a power cut. Also check your pre-payment meter if you have one to make sure that you haven’t run out of credit.

When the power is cut off, it can sometimes return in surges, so you should switch everything in the house off at the plug to prevent any damage being caused by a power surge. Leave one light on though as this will be an easy way to tell when the power comes back on.

Have some supplies for when you have a power cut at the ready, torches and spare batteries are essential for finding your way around in the dark safely. Candles are also useful but make sure that you do not leave them unattended or leave them on whilst you are asleep. Many people like to keep a diesel generator in their home. You can buy them form a company like Gener-g and they can provide you with backup electrical power.

Check up on your neighbours, particularly if they are on their own or elderly, and make sure that they have everything they need. They may need help navigating their house or getting to bed.
