Powered tapping machines are not for every workshop but they earn their space very quickly when the work is suited.
High-Volume Repetitive Runs
For production of dozens to hundreds of identical holes, powered tapping is far better than manual tapping. In this production method the biggest problem of manual tapping (inconsistent torque) is quickly supplemented by the problem of operator fatigue. In the end the parts are rejected due to the suboptimal quality of the threads. A powered tapping machine will provide the same amount of torque every time, resulting in perfectly made threads.
Awkward or Deep-Set Locations
We all come across parts with holes that are simply a pain to access. Recessed holes, corners of sharp radii, holes within deep parts. All these can be tapped using an arm-mounted Roscamat Tapping Machine. The arm can be set up to allow the motor head to be positioned so that the tap can enter the hole square to the part. The arm then holds the motor head in that position allowing for accurate tapping of the hole.
Sensitive Materials
Aluminium is easy to strip, Stainless Steel rapidly hardens, and Brass can crack due to sudden spikes in torque. These are very sensitive materials that require great precision and all powered tappers are fitted with a clutch that releases the tap when resistance reaches a set figure – something that no human can do reliably.
Blind Holes
The problem with tapping blind holes by hand is not knowing exactly when to reverse direction with the tap. There is a great danger of the tap breaking in the hole. Powered tapping machines are fitted with clutch controlled reversal, which stops and reverses the tap at a predetermined depth. This means that you will always get a complete hole, and there is no danger of the tap breaking.
Reducing RSI Risk
Manual tapping is a repetitive task that involves considerable physical effort and is well known to put users at risk of developing upper limb disorders, especially as a result of repetitive tasks, as the Health and Safety Executive notes.
